Our Doctor

An open letter to health care workers and practitioners

From the desk of Doctor Claude Morin MD

Since the arrival of SureSlim in Canada during 1999 I have worked with the company as their medical consultant, during which period I have reviewed tens of thousands of their blood tests, (paid for by SureSlim and not the MSP), and from a medical practitioner's perspective, I would like to tell you more about their program.

I am a registered medical practitioner based in Victoria, British Columbia who has worked in general practice for more than 35 years. I have always had great interest in the treatment of obesity and the related research that goes on constantly in the medical journals.

SureSlim offers an appealing approach from the medical point of view.

Each client is assessed with a comprehensive series of blood tests.

This helps to estimate certain values that are essential when compiling an individual diet. For example, when a client is found to have an elevated uric acid level, a low purine diet is formulated initially to help lower this level. When the total cholesterol level is elevated the client has a diet that aims to reduce fats particularly those from a non-vegetarian source and those high in saturated fats. Also considered are the Full Blood Count (FBC), liver function, electrolytes, renal function including Glomerular Filtration Rates (GFR), fasting blood sugar and thyroid stimulating hormones, all of which contribute to the client's state of health. If a client has abnormal thyroid, cholesterol, uric acid, glucose, etc results, the client is asked to see their own doctor for proper investigation and treatment of any underlying condition.

Once the blood test results have been screened, the SureSlim program compiling department begins their work formulating an individualized diet for the client. Other factors such as medications, medical history and client food likes and dislikes are also taken into account as well as variable, portion controlled, healthy meals from all food groups.

The SureSlim eating program and concepts have been well researched and draw upon a number of different ideas about weight loss and nutrition. Low glycemic index foods, low saturated foods, fruits, vegetables and seeds are all incorporated to compile a healthy, nutritionally balanced diet while still allowing the client to lose weight. The daily caloric content for SureSlim programs are between 1100 - 1800 although the diet does not focus on counting calories but rather looks at the nutritional content of the food and is formulated to help the client see the value of eating healthy food.

SureSlim focuses on encouraging permanent lifestyle change through healthy eating habits and exercise routines as part of their lifestyle change and many SureSlim clinics do have suitable equipment to help kick start new habits.

Many clients have the Metabolic Syndrome (also known as Syndrome X, impaired glucose tolerance and hyperglycemic conditions) due to their lifestyle. The SureSlim diet aims to address this problem and help the patient's glucose metabolism correct itself. Many clients are pre-diabetic or already have diabetes and this program has produced positive results. In many cases, they have been able to reduce or stop their diabetic and other medications.

As a health care professional, you likely often come into contact with people who are overweight or obese and looking to lose weight as a means to improve their health. Many weight loss programs on the market focus on quick-fix solutions - pre-packaged foods, pills, injections, etc - and are not medically supervised or even safe.

SureSlim believes that healthy weight loss should be about real, lifestyle changes, education and emotional support. The SureSlim weight loss program begins with a blood test to:

1. Determine if the client has any underlying health issues that need attention or may affect weight loss.

2. Help us prepare an eating plan customized to the nutritional needs of each individual. If you would like to learn more about how SureSlim can help your clients/patients, please contact one of our helpful consultants at the location nearest you.
